Women's Mid-Amateur Added - Nebraska Golf Association

Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur Added Women's Golf - Nebraska Golf Association
NEBRASKA WOMEN'S MID-AMATEUR ADDED TO SCHEDULE TROPHY TO BE NAMED IN HONOR OF LAURA SAFOMAHA (April 15, 2021) – The Nebraska Golf Association is adding a new championship in 2021, the Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur Championship, in honor of the late Laura Saf.
The Inaugural Nebraska Women's Mid-Amateur will take place September 18-19 at Fremont Golf Club. The championship is for women 25 and older, and will feature 36 holes of stroke play. In addition to the championship competition, the field will be flighted based on first round scores, and players will have an opportunity to win prizes within their flight.
The new trophy will be named the Laura Saf Trophy, in honor of the longtime NGA board member, who passed away in the fall of 2020 from the COVID-19 virus. Saf served the NGA for many years, both as a board member and a volunteer rules official. She was the first woman to serve on the board of directors for the NGA.
“Laura was both a friend and a mentor to so many women golfers," NGA President Kim Robak said. "Honoring her with the trophy for the Nebraska Women’s Mid-Am is a fitting tribute for all that she has contributed to the game.”
Saf's reach went far beyond the NGA, as she was also a longtime USGA committee member, who officiated many USGA championships, including the U.S. Open and U.S. Women’s Open. She served as the host club general chairman for the 1996 U.S. Women’s Amateur at Firethorn Golf Club. That launched her into a strong relationship with the USGA, where she served on the Women’s Regional Affairs Committee, Regional Affairs Committee and the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship Committee. In 2001, she was elected to the prestigious USGA Women’s Committee, on which she served until 2011.
Saf's time on the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship Committee inspired the addition of the new NGA championship, which will add a third offering for women to compete at the highest level in the state. The NGA also conducts the Nebraska Women's Amateur and the Nebraska Women's Match Play.
Entries for the new championship will open on May 3 at 8 a.m. CDT. The entry fee is $150 and includes cart for both days. Saturday's first round will be an afternoon start, while Sunday's final round will be a morning start.

Flower Gardening With Peonies
Planting Peony Gardens
How to Plant PeoniesPeony roots are available to purchase at box stores, nurseries and online catalogs. by: David Lott Horticulture Extension Educator

  •          Find a sunny location with 8 hours or direct light.
  •          Prepare the soil in the planting location first, adding compost/shredded leaves, etc. into the soil to a depth of 12 inches.
  •          You can add a couple tablespoons of sulfur in the planting bed, and mix in with the soil. DO NOT put sulfur directly in the bottom of the planting hole.
  •          Water the mixed soil so it can resettle before planting.
  •          Peonies needs to be planting shallow. It is very easy to plant them too deep, which leads to no blooms or flat-out failure.
  •          Very lightly cover with mulch on the top with mulch, no more than an inch deep.
